Mount Gay Black Barrel
Mount Gay Black Barrel is a small batch, handcrafted blend made of matured double pot distillates and aged column distillates. In a process called finishing, the blended rum is then matured for a second time in deeply charred Bourbon oak barrels. This unique process releases spicy aromas that are at once balanced, and bold.
Mount Gay Black Barrel has complex notes of spice, toasted wood, followed by a subtle fruitiness. Its taste is bold spice balanced with oaky vanilla and sweet caramel, and the finish is warm, medium in body and lingering.
Mount Gay was established in the Caribbean island of Barbados in 1703 when Sir John Gay joined forces with a friend of his who had recently inherited a then unknown distillery. John Gay easily took to the business of managing the distillery, and quickly refined the distillation process to produce a superior quality rum.
In the eighteenth century Barbadian rum and sugar cane were in high demand. Bridgetown had become one of the wealthiest ports in the world, as sailors sought their fortune along the sugar and rum trade routes.
The reputation for being a rum of the highest quality helped Mount Gay gain traction in one of the toughest drinks markets of the time, and it is this historic legacy that continues today in every bottle of Mount Gay Rum produced.
